A Lingering Effect of the Pandemic: ‘Never-Ending’ Guilt
Both Stephanie Hills and her mother contracted Covid-19 earlier this year, but Ms. Hills survived and her mother did not. She still feels guilty that she could not visit her mother in the hospital during her final days. Photographs by Mary Beth Koeth for the The New York Times
Lisa Leslie | ESPN
Since its inception, the WNBA has continually pushed the boundaries of what women athletes can accomplish on the court and in their communities.
Lisa Leslie wasn't playing basketball when she discovered she could dunk. She was at high school track practice, and smacked the rim practicing her high jump approach. "Not seeing other women dunk, it hadn't dawned on me to try," she said. Before long, she was dunking with the boys at pep rallies. In 2002, after she'd won two Olympic gold medals and a WNBA championship with the LA Sparks, @lisaleslie set a preseason goal to dunk in the WNBA. A few months later, against the Miami Sol, she made history. "I didn't think of it as a historic moment," she said. "I'm like, 'wait, wait, we gotta play defense!'"

“After the Ohio Senior Olympics, Dad and his friends started training in earnest. They traveled to other ping-pong clubs, testing themselves against different players. Doc hired a coach, a kid in his 20s who is trying to make the actual U.S. Table Tennis team. My dad started being more conscientious about what he ate: fewer late-night potato chips, more vegetables.”

“When I hear music, I feel electrified. I can’t just sit there—I’ve got to get up and dance. I got my first job as a cruise ship dance host when I was about 70. Since then, I’ve filled my time with three or four trips a year. It’s not a paid gig, but you do get food and lodging in exchange for a small daily fee. I do ballroom dances with the women traveling solo. My job is to make everyone look good on the dance floor. I get to meet all these lovely people. I don’t think of my age when I do this. It seems to erase time.” —As told to Michael Anft
Former high school teacher Richard Conti, 83, lives in Arlington, Massachusetts.
