10 Minutes with Sam Bankman Fried

On the 29th of September, I flew solo from Miami to the Bahamas to photograph FTX founder, Sam Bankman-Fried for The Australian Financial Review Magazine’s Young & Rich issue.

Going into the assignment, I knew I had ten minutes to work with Sam. I was hoping for a few tight, dynamic portraits and one environmental option in or around his office. When I arrived, I was given a tour of the main office and was told that I wouldn’t be able to photograph him there. We walked across the parking lot to an empty office space with two small bedrooms on one side, which allowed the company’s employees or visiting investors to sleep. On the other side of the empty space was the office of the company therapist, George Lerner. I set up my lights and asked George if he could sit in for me before Sam arrived on set. We spoke about the challenges of relocating with family to a small, remote island from his former life in San Francisco. I was also able to get a good sense of what Sam would be like to work with. If anyone knew the answer to that, it would be the company therapist.

Sam showed up in his typical wardrobe - an FTX t-shirt, shorts, high socks and sneakers. I worked with him for ten minutes while he was discussing future meetings and business on the side with his assistant standing next to me. He was kind, but seemed distracted, so I decided to forgo the environmental portrait.

On October 28th, our cover came out.

On Friday, November 11, FTX filed for bankruptcy.

Raven Run | Gringo

The Raven Run lost one of its most beloved runners last week. Tom “Gringo,” a Hall of Fame Runner with over 1,600 Raven Runs and 654 swims, died on March 2. His final run with Raven was last year, at 83 years old, which earned Gringo the Event of the Year for being the oldest runner ever to complete the run. This was at least his third time earning an Event of the Year—once for running during Hurricane Irene and another time for running while in the middle of chemotherapy. Gringo had a way of sensing someone’s best quality and bringing it out. After five minutes of conversation with anyone, I think he could’ve given the eulogy at her funeral. I’ve probably run about 50 times with Gringo and will cherish the miles we put in together. I’m grateful for the stories he told, many of which live on in the hearts and minds of other runners, and in the pages of Running with Raven. Two weeks ago, when Yellow Rose and Raven went to visit Gringo, Raven asked him how he was doing. Gringo replied, “I’m dancing as long as the music lasts.”

He may have made it to the NBA a decade ago, but Bismack Biyombo's heart never left home. Biyombo hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, a nation rich in natural resources like cobalt and copper, but still plagued by extreme poverty. "I've seen so much suffering from our people," says Biyombo, a 6 ft. 8 in. center who has played in Charlotte, Toronto and Orlando, and was a free agent going into the 2021–2022 season. "Every day, you go home, you go back in your room, you're by yourself, crying. You're trying to find an explanation to certain things you don’t understand. Why? Why? Why? Then it gets to the point where, instead of the why, why, why, it's time to take the action." Biyombo, 29, is doing just that. He has donated his own money and raised funds through the Bismack Biyombo Foundation to build schools and sports facilities, provide scholarships and improve health care in Congo. Biyombo says he and his foundation have given scholarships to more than 5,000 Congolese students. "This has become my lifetime mission," he says. "I'll be willing to keep pushing until I have nothing left in the tank for my people." Photograph by Mary Beth Koeth for TIME

Have you ever wondered what zoologists wear to work every day?

Me neither.

After spending the morning with Zoo Miami's Ron Magill, Chelsea the sloth, and an 11-foot albino Burmese python named Prince, not only did I want to know what Ron wears, I wanted to know EVERYTHING.

September 2019 | Southwest: The Magazine

“After the Ohio Senior Olympics, Dad and his friends started training in earnest. They traveled to other ping-pong clubs, testing themselves against different players. Doc hired a coach, a kid in his 20s who is trying to make the actual U.S. Table Tennis team. My dad started being more conscientious about what he ate: fewer late-night potato chips, more vegetables.”
