In 2013, on the Upper East Side of New York City, I saw a beautiful frail woman talking to her miniature poodle like the dog was her closest confidante. They were both dressed in pink. The interaction made me smile. So I sat down on a bench outside a cafĆ© called Gotham, and, very fortunately, this woman whose name was Carol Ann, sat down next me. I donāt remember how we started talking, but our conversation lasted two hours. We exchanged emails and kept in touch with long letters that covered our lives of the past and present and hopes for the future. Weād also catch up over coffee at Gotham CafĆ© whenever my travels landed me in New York City.
In May 2018, a few days before I was scheduled to be in Manhattan for a one day stopover before heading to London, Carol Annās husband called and said Carol Ann was on life support in the hospital. āI just wanted to let you know, in case you could come and say goodbye,ā he said. āYou meant a lot to her.ā My one day layover in New York was the same day that Carol Ann was taken off of life support. I was able to say goodbye to my sweet friend. Today, Carol Ann is on my mind, I just wanted you to know about her and the good things that can happen when weāre kind to strangers on a bench.

āI have always loved trees and wanted to protect them. I'd watch movies like WALL-Eāwhere the whole earth is filled with trashāand I was the one kid who was like, "Oh my gosh, we have to do something!" If I see that movie today, I still get upset.ā

Have you ever wondered what zoologists wear to work every day?
Me neither.
After spending the morning with Zoo Miami's Ron Magill, Chelsea the sloth, and an 11-foot albino Burmese python named Prince, not only did I want to know what Ron wears, I wanted to know EVERYTHING.

āAfter the Ohio Senior Olympics, Dad and his friends started training in earnest. They traveled to other ping-pong clubs, testing themselves against different players. Doc hired a coach, a kid in his 20s who is trying to make the actual U.S. Table Tennis team. My dad started being more conscientious about what he ate: fewer late-night potato chips, more vegetables.ā

āWhen I hear music, I feel electrified. I canāt just sit thereāIāve got to get up and dance. I got my first job as a cruise ship dance host when I was about 70. Since then, Iāve filled my time with three or four trips a year. Itās not a paid gig, but you do get food and lodging in exchange for a small daily fee. I do ballroom dances with the women traveling solo. My job is to make everyone look good on the dance floor. I get to meet all these lovely people. I donāt think of my age when I do this. It seems to erase time.ā āAs told to Michael Anft

āLike a true nerd, I googled āathletic drillsā before the shoot and had my assistant, Javier, practice in front of the camera. We showed Alex a few side-to-side drills that worked, and she got on set and nailed it. If you look at the images of Alex next to the images of Javier, itās clear who the world-class athlete is. I say that with love. Javier is fit, but heās not winning a World Cup anytime soonā
