I’ve struggled to love myself most of my life. I’ve never been happy with the reflection in the mirror.

I saw someone who was weak. Someone who allowed themselves to be abused and harassed. I saw someone who was never good enough or deserving of love. The person in the mirror was too tall. Too big. Not American enough. Not Filipino enough.

Enter a diagnosis of triple negative breast cancer and the way I saw the world, myself, completely changed.

In the past 6 weeks I’ve received an outpouring of love and support that I never expected. Whether it was providing dinner for my family or sending words of encouragement, each gesture has meant the world. It’s the love and encouragement that motivates me to fight each day, but it has also taught me to love myself.

For the first time in 35 years, when I look in the mirror, I love who I see. I see a mom who loves her girls and a wife who adores her husband. I see someone who loves her community and all those in her tribe. I see someone strong and deserving of love.

A good friend once told me, “It’s the best kept secret in the universe. Love starts within. Once you figure that out and love yourself in a real way, love you didn’t even know was possible starts pouring in.”

Call me crazy, but cancer was the best thing to ever happen to me.

For people who make cruising a lifestyle, not just a pastime, being marooned on land was devastating. Charles Falls Jr., known as Chillie, is one of those cruisers who set sail as much as possible. He has been on 55 cruises and in recent years started hosting a YouTube show about the industry.

Raven Run | Gringo

The Raven Run lost one of its most beloved runners last week. Tom “Gringo,” a Hall of Fame Runner with over 1,600 Raven Runs and 654 swims, died on March 2. His final run with Raven was last year, at 83 years old, which earned Gringo the Event of the Year for being the oldest runner ever to complete the run. This was at least his third time earning an Event of the Year—once for running during Hurricane Irene and another time for running while in the middle of chemotherapy. Gringo had a way of sensing someone’s best quality and bringing it out. After five minutes of conversation with anyone, I think he could’ve given the eulogy at her funeral. I’ve probably run about 50 times with Gringo and will cherish the miles we put in together. I’m grateful for the stories he told, many of which live on in the hearts and minds of other runners, and in the pages of Running with Raven. Two weeks ago, when Yellow Rose and Raven went to visit Gringo, Raven asked him how he was doing. Gringo replied, “I’m dancing as long as the music lasts.”

FOR DECADES, American open-wheel racing was the source of much motorsport innovation, including in safety. That’s thanks largely to Dr. Stephen Olvey, a neurosurgeon, and Dr. Terry Trammell, an orthopedic surgeon. The biggest names in IndyCar owe their continued careers—and in some cases, their lives—to these two doctors.
Olvey grew up in Indianapolis and began attending the Indy 500 as a kid. The speedway was the first racetrack in the world to have an on-site medical facility, and as a med student at Indiana University, Olvey volunteered his services during the 500. There he met Dr. Thomas Hanna, who ran the center and hired Olvey to be the on-track doctor. That led the USAC, the sanctioning body for American open-wheel racing, to bring on Olvey as a traveling doctor, ensuring that drivers received the same level of care at all tracks. Olvey also standardized post-crash procedures by creating the modern rapid-response safety team.
